A demon who is opening a restaurant in Hell. He appears to Cordelia to become her patron; he grants her warlock powers in exchange for leaving coins on the eyes of the dead. These serve as coupons for Cheddar's diner The Other Side, where newly dead souls can have a decent meal. Admittedly, most of his meals are made from the souls of the damned, but this does not appear to be uncommon in Hell.
Cheddar primarily manifests by halting time, appearing to Cordelia by possessing someone nearby. Cheddar can appear to others as he pleases, but prefers to keep his involvement a secret.
Cheddar appeared during Mothra-Tau-Delta's ritual for good luck on their finals, possessing Cordelia's sorority leader Reena Hanowary to make his offer as her warlock patron. He also warns her to get off campus before Polaris University is wiped off the map. He appears sporadically throughout the series, advising or warning Cordelia when he finds it urgent enough. He claims that he wants to remain professional, but he seemingly shows genuine compassion and remains flexible while dealing with Cordelia. He emphasizes that he doesn't want her to be sad and appears to Frederick via cockroach to berate him into helping Cordelia escape from prison. While Cheddar doesn't share much information about it, he seems aware of some sort of uproar in Hell. This appears to be a result or cause of the disappearance of Polaris.
Quotes[]
- "I say lesson learned, but nothin's ever happened to me. I'm a demon as far as virgins can be. WHOOPS! I mean to say I'm a virgin as far as demons can be. I guess... as far as virgins go though, I am a bit of a demon. I ain't never got it wet."
- "That's what happens when you assume. ...you fuck up."
- "This is a fuck the coupon situation!"
Trivia[]
- Cheddar is a self-confessed virgin. He is also surprised at how often this comes up in conversation. This may be due to the fact that he can't remain in a physical body for long enough to sleep or fuck.
- Cheddar has possessed many characters so far, including Bellow, Frederick de Bonesby, and Davo. He will also resort to possessing animals like a woodpecker or cockroach. The process is vaguely harmful to his hosts, and Cheddar has shown concern about staying in any body for too long. He seems to despite killing people, especially those he's inhabiting.
- Chedder has preferences regarding what bodies he inhabits. He has called Bellow's the "cadilac of bodies" while showing immediate discomfort from possessing Stirfry.
- He prefers to keep Cordelia and his arrangement a secret, even interfering when she tries to tell someone about him.
- Cheddar provides Cordelia with various gifts as part of their pact. He granted her a bag of magic coins to put over the eyes of the dead, which grants them coupons for his diner. He implores her not to spend them, but doesn't specify why beyond "It'll be bad." When Cordelia starts to question their bargain later, he provides her with Cordelia Junior to serve as her familiar.
- Cheddar explains that while he stops time in the material plane, time continues to flow in Hell when he is visiting Cordelia. Nearby demons are unaffected by the freezing effect.
- Cheddar's ability to communicate with the material plane is greatly dampened by anti-magic. Cheddar refers to this as "getting no bars."
- Cheddar has yet to show his true form since he only ever appears by possessing someone's body. The Witch Hunter identifies this as a trait of "wandering demons," a type that has no body of their own and inhabits others instead. While most of their kind tend to settle inside a preferred host body, Hibiscus Heracles theorizes that Cheddar has some defect that makes him unable to remain in a body for long, leaving him unable to rest.
- Ulcer Anatomies describes Cheddar as a "the first of his kind." He is a lesser-known demon in his circles, but a fan favorite among those who know of him. When he thinks Cordelia is being threatened by demons, Cheddar asks to speak to them because some of them respect him.
- Old folk tales tell of Cheddar as a creature that would punish children who lie by moving people wherever he pleases in an instant. This led to the Piss Harbor schoolyard rhyme of "Cheddar, Cheddar, no one better. We hate our teacher, go and get her."
- The ancient artist Painto depicted a creature with the unique eyes of Cheddar. Some believe that this means he was among the first demons to reach out to the mortal world.
